Upper Saddle River, NJ convergence results in one plate overriding the other for a short distance. Unlike the previous types of convergence described above, this type displays no outer swell, deep-sea trench or forearc wedge. Instead the two continents become compressed causing significant deformation by folding and thrust faulting to form a high mountain chain (Fig. 9). Ultimately the two continents become ‘welded’ together with the fold mountain chain marking the line of suture. Ophiolites may be found thrust into the suture zone.

Porphyritic – two distinct sizes of grains are present. The larger, well formed crystals are referred to as phenocrysts; the smaller crystals are referred to as the matrix or groundmass. The presence of this texture suggests two stages of cooling. The texture can occur in phaneritic and aphanitic igneous rocks. Glassy texture develops when the molten rock cools so rapidly that the migration of ions to form crystal grains is impaired. This type of texture is commonly found in the crust of lava flows and in viscous (silica rich) magma.

The igneous rock names are determined from mineralogy. Common rock forming minerals are shown in Fig. 7. Pyroclastic rocks Pyroclastic rocks are formed by volcanic activity (Fig. 8). Typical types of pyroclastic rock are agglomerate, but more commonly tuff. Agglomerate is found very close to the crater or the centre of the volcano and will be formed of large angular fragments, typically crystals, that have been formed at depth and have been ejected. It can include other rock fragments and will tend to be surrounded by ash which has solidified.
