Repeated interviewing Children in subsequent interviews can reproduce false information suggested previously. If an interviewer frequently repeats a question within an interview, the child may think that the first answer was wrong and she should change it. g. merely implying someone is bad can result in a child reporting that the person had lied or cheated when he had not done these things.

It’s okay to use any words that you want to. A child may need to be told that he can use sexually explicit language. However, be prepared for it when he does. It can be shocking to hear such words as ‘cunt’ or ‘prick’ come out of the mouth of a young child. It’s important to only talk about things that really happened. This is not a competency assessment (see Chapter 1 for a discussion on competency), but merely advises the child to speak the truth. misunderstandings in the interview, the child may not respond to these even though she has understood them.

Finally, a pre-interview assessment should also introduce the child to the ground rules of the interview (see next section) and give her an opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of these before relating any abuse-related information (Sternberg et al. 1997). WHAT ARE THE GROUND RULES OF THE INTERVIEW? A young child is often inexperienced in interviewing and does not appreciate the intent or purpose of an interviewer’s questions (Siegal 1991). When a child does not understand the process or rules of the interview, she is less likely to provide a detailed account.
